Great. Another President That Speaks To God

I thought there might be a slight chance that we would finally be past this. You know, the “God/Jesus told me to do it” form of leadership that Dubya was so often going on about.

As I have stated many times, I have no problem with any person, politician or not, having a strong personal belief system. Where it goes wrong is when you are taking specific directions from some ethereal spirit. To quote Barry in his speech yesterday:

“This is the source of our confidence — the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny.”

Really? Did God call on us? I must not have gotten the message. Did he actually call or was it a text message? Was it only for his followers or for all of us? Couldn’t the Big Guy just cut to the chase and shape the future by himself?

I really do not like this line of thinking. It is how wars get started and people get killed. “God called on us to do it”. Barry is not on the job one freaking day and he is already playing the God card.

He went on to say that with “God’s grace upon us”, we would continue to have freedom. What if God does not put his grace upon us? Does that mean that what limited freedom we currently have gets completely taken away?

Lastly, he closed with the “and God bless the United States of America” line. Does God bless one nation at a time? Could you have not just said “God bless the world” and covered a lot more territory? What is wrong with sharing a little love with the non-US peeps out there. Maybe you could have said “God bless North America”. That way, some of His blessings would have covered Mexico and Canada. Are they not worthy of mention?

Please President Obama…stop going to church everyday and waiting for a lighting bolt to hit you in the head and tell you what to do. Do that on your own time. You are now on the peoples time and there is enough to do as it is. You are a smart guy so I am sure you can figure it out.

If there is a God, here is what I know. God does not care about arbitrary, man made boundaries and nationality. He doesn’t love Americans anymore than he loves any other nation. Just like he doesn’t love the Cardinals anymore than the Steelers. It is up to President Obama to make the hard decisions that need to be made. Don’t pull a Dubya and talk about how Jesus tells you when to eat each day. Be a leader and separate your faith from your politics.

If you will put aside your personal beliefs while on official business, maybe other world leaders can be convinced to do the same. Your goals will be a lot easier to achieve if you do not have to have a conversation on whether Jesus could kick Buddha’s butt in a steel cage match. Non Christian religions do not want to be Christian so get over that goal. Just be a good man and do good things for people, regardless of creed, color, or religion. That should do the trick.

Hallelujah and pass the salvation.

He’s just letting the hardcore right-wing nuts know that he too can “speak to God.” Judging from his first few actions as the POTUS, it looks like his God doesn’t say the same things that W’s God says.

  2. womaninblack says:

It’s a bit like sports players attributing their success to having prayed for God’s strength and help. So God favours particular sports men or women, does he? What if there are six committed Christians running the 100m? Does He draw lots…?

  3. Doug says:

“Be a leader and separate your faith from your politics.” If someone truly has certain beliefs about God (or God’s desires) can they really completely separate those beliefs from their politics? I would imagine it would somehow shape all of your thoughts and actions.

    • tannerleah says:

Doug – From a morality standpoint, I am sure that Barry’s faith guides him and that is fine.

I am speaking specifically to two points. First, God is not telling him to do anything. What he does is on his shoulders, not some imaginary force. Second, much of the world does not share his Christian beliefs and he should not make it an issue. Even in his speech yesterday, he casually lumped all Muslims into the same category. This does not help the cause. All priests are not pedophiles (I think) and all Muslims are not murderers.

He would be well served to leave his religion in his home and church.

Will someone please explain to me the gratuitous adulation bestowed upon Obama (cue Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar ♪♪♪…)? What has the man DONE? I can’t wrap my mind around the whole Hollywoodization (or is it Ophraization) of DC. This has been the most surreal election I can remember. A (half) black man (a man of God no less!) was elected POTUS. So?

    • tannerleah says:

He hasn’t done anything yet. It is what he MIGHT do that has people excited. He MIGHT end the war in Iraq and restore our status in the world as a benevolent leader…not a bully. He DOES bring the kind of deep thinking that most people want in their president. Even the most ardent Bush supporter is past the “I want a POTUS I can drink with” thinking. No you don’t.

He MIGHT be open to other cultures and religions and reduce the religious rhetoric that Dubya was so fond of. (Although I must say I have serious doubts about this). He MIGHT do what is right financially for ALL people rather than the richest of the rich. He DID cross a racial barrier (even if partially) that has never been crossed before.

I actually get all of the expectations and hopes that people are putting on Barry. Can he deliver? Who knows?

By the way, did I mention you are a RACIST!!!

  5. elizabeth3hersh says:

Seriously,TL, you sound like one of Barry’s speech writers (very inspiring!). I have high expectations of any man elected POTUS. I have the same high expectations of any professional I hire: surgeon, attorney, CPA, etc. I expect him to perform flawlessly (within reason). He will no doubt will be one of many others who could do the same job with the same exceptional results. We are supposed to elect a man who is competent and can deliver. What distinguishes Obama from our last president is the ability to articulate. This idol worship business is over-the-top and way too Hollywood-esque for my tastes. (Cue more Andrew Lloyd Webber…”he’s just a man”…).

Glenn Beck said that 89 percent of us believe in God.
And you thought I didn’t like to socialize with the minorities?

  7. Doug says:

Why waste your breath moaning at TL?
Nothing can be done to stop the shouting.
If every tongue were stilled the noise would still continue.
    The rocks and stones themselves
    Would start to sing!
Hey-sanna, ho-sanna, sanna sanna hey, sanna hosanna
Hey Barry, Barry, won’t you fight for me?
    Sanna ho, sanna hey, Superstar!

    • tannerleah says:

Doug – As God as my witness…I know, not a lot of credibility there…I just bought Jesus Christ Superstar 2 days ago. Carl Anderson is da bomb as Judas. Will be watching it again this weekend. Why anyone would watch that Mel Gibson crap when they can watch this is beyond me.

  8. art vandelay says:

Tannerleah or Glenn Beck?? Well since I now think Glenn Beck is HOT I’m going with him

  9. art vandelay says:

P.S. Is Jesus Christ Superstar really good? Seriously? Never seen it.

    • tannerleah says:

Art – Hmm…to me, yes. To most Jesus freaks I know, they don’t really like it. If you take it for what it is meant to be, a musical with a bit of a message, you will enjoy it. If you are going to get pissed because Judas is played by a black man, then probably not.

I hate musicals so I must think it is really, really good.

  10. elizabeth3hersh says:

Doug-you are hilarious!! Loved the whole hey-sanna riff. My first husband (a pharmacist) played this a thousand times (seriously) in our little Las Vegas apartment when we first met. I hated it at the time. After he passed, I finally “got” it. When I moved back to Las Vegas, I purchased the CD set and now love it (and like TL, I hate musicals).

Art, TL is hotter (and funnier) than Glenn Beck. Who is your allegiance with?

  11. Doug Panther says:

The movie or the album? I love the original album where Jesus was played by Ian Gillan (of Deep Purple fame). His scream when he sings to God about dying sends shivers up my spine:

    Alright I’ll die!
Oh oh just watch me die!
See how see how I’ll die!
    Oh just watch me die!

  12. Doug Panther says:

TL – I just realized that you obviously bought the movie since you said you “watched” it. Liz – did your husband really “pass” or do you mean “moved along”?

    • tannerleah says:

Doug – I used to have the original LP. I agree about Gillan being a better Jesus. But I still take Carl over Murray Head. (Maybe the visuals influence my decision).

Liz’s ex is dead as in “dirt nap” dead. It is unclear if she was in any way illegally involved.

  13. art vandelay says:

The musical is actually coming to my area next month.
I may have to actually check this out and report back.

  14. art vandelay says:

LIZ–Here’s a joke I received today in my e-mail…thought you might enjoy:
    Wise Old Jewish Man

A female CNN journalist heard about a very old Jewish man who had been going to the Western Wall to pray, twice a day, every day, for a long, long time.

So she went to check it out. She went to the Western Wall and there he was, walking slowly up to the holy site.

She watched him pray and after about 45 minutes, when he turned to leave, using a cane and moving very slowly, she approached him for an interview.

“Pardon me, sir, I’m Rebecca Smith from CNN. What’s your name?”

    “Morris Fishbien,” he replied.

“Sir, how long have you been coming to the Western Wall and praying?”

    “For about 60 years.”
“60 years! That’s amazing! What do you pray for?”

“I pray for peace between the Christians, Jews and the Muslims. I pray for all the wars and all the hatred to stop. I pray for all our children to grow up safely as responsible adults, and to love their fellow man.”

“How do you feel after doing this for 60 y ears?”

    “Like I’m talking to a f—in wall.”

I feel a little sacreligious (sp?) about sending this after visiting the Holy place as it is an extremely emotional experience but I loved this joke!

Inauguration ’09: Get complete coverage from the nation’s capital.

  15. elizabeth3hersh says:

    Loved the joke Art! Thanks!

Doug, I have the original cast CD. It is far superior to the other one made IMHO. I “moved on” before my ex passed (huge mistake as we had compatible neurosis). Few can put up with my bulldozer personality (fair assessment TL?).
